Downtown Los Angeles Engagement Session | Vincent + Alex

Vincent and Alex’s engagement session was dark, cinematic, and deeply personal. Shot around Downtown Los Angeles, this session leaned into texture, shadow, and movement rather than polish. As Los Angeles wedding photographers, we love when couples give themselves permission to be real instead of perfect, and this session was exactly that.

They came in knowing what they wanted: authenticity, a little grit, and photos that felt like them.

A Love Story 12 Years in the Making

Alex and Vincent are high school sweethearts. Twelve years in, Vincent still makes Alex feel like that smitten teenage girl, and that history lives quietly underneath every interaction they share. Their dynamic is beautifully balanced. Vincent is outgoing and funny, Alex more reserved and introspective, and together they feel grounded, steady, and deeply connected.

They’re both metalheads, a little spooky, and completely unafraid of the macabre. They got engaged at Sick New World in April, which feels exactly right for them.

When they’re not planning a wedding, they travel to explore historical architecture, try new foods, play video games together, and watch movies. That shared love of atmosphere and storytelling heavily influenced how we approached their engagement photos.

Inspired by Wong Kar Wai, Grounded in DTLA

For this session, Vincent and Alex were inspired by the films of Wong Kar-wai. Moody color, quiet moments, emotional distance paired with closeness, and beauty found in imperfection. Downtown Los Angeles gave us the perfect canvas.

We moved through gritty city streets, dark spaces, and overlooked corners of DTLA, letting the environment shape the session rather than fighting it. The city’s textures, shadows, and movement mirrored what they love most: realism over refinement.

They wore all black, keeping things timeless and understated, allowing expression and connection to lead instead of styling.

What They Wanted These Photos to Say

More than anything, Vincent and Alex wanted the people who have known their relationship for the past 12 years to recognize them in these images. Just them.

They’re drawn to beauty in imperfection, grunge, and emotional honesty, and that guided every choice we made, from locations to pacing to how much we directed (very little).

The result is a set of images that feels cinematic without feeling staged. Intimate without feeling precious.

Looking Ahead to Their Long Beach Wedding

Vincent and Alex will be getting married at The Sanctuary by Wedgewood Weddings, a 115-year-old chapel converted into a wedding venue. With just 65 loved ones in attendance, their wedding is shaping up to be intimate, intentional, and full of meaning, much like this engagement session.

Their first dance song, Take Aim by Sleep Token, already tells you everything you need to know.

Photographing Engagement Sessions in Los Angeles

We approach engagement sessions the same way we approach weddings: by paying attention. To who you are together, how you move through space, and what actually matters to you.

If you’re looking for a Los Angeles wedding photographer or planning an engagement session in DTLA and want something cinematic, honest, and rooted in your real dynamic, we’d love to create something that feels unmistakably yours.
